Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) is a deliquescent desiccant, meaning it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and gradually dissolves into a concentrated brine solution. In its pure form, calcium chloride can absorb several times its own dry weight in water.

Modern calcium chloride desiccants are commonly formulated with anhydrous calcium chloride and a suitable carrier material, such as starch. As moisture is absorbed, the formulation converts the captured moisture into a gel-like or contained form, helping prevent leakage when properly designed and packaged.

Depending on the formulation, environmental conditions, and test method, calcium chloride desiccants can achieve very high moisture absorption capacity—up to approximately 300% of their dry weight.

Actual performance will depend on relative humidity, temperature, exposure duration, packaging conditions, and product formulation.
